What is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a 3,000 year old Chinese technique involving the insertion of fine needles just under the skin in specific locations to treat a wide variety of complaints.  The World Health Organization says acupuncture can be beneficial in many conditions ranging from neurological and gastrointestinal to mental and emotions ones.  The point location is based on the concept of Qi (pronounced ‘Chee’) or vital energy that flows throughout the body via meridians (pathways).  When we are in perfect health, all the energy runs harmoniously throughout our body.  When we are sick, the flow of Qi becomes unbalanced and this can manifest in a range of symptoms.  To treat these unbalances, the acupuncturist inserts small needles in the specific points along these meridians altering the Qi flow ~ dispersing and regulating this flow of energy in the meridians.   A simplified ‘Western’ explanation of acupuncture is that inserting needles into the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain.  These chemicals will either change the experience of pain or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system.  The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.

A better alternative to botox.  Cosmetic acupuncture increases collagen production to help reduce fine lines and soften the edges of deeper creases.  It brings blood flow to the face and brightens the complexion.  This treatment is always done in conjunction with a body treatment ~ the face is a reflection of the health of the body!
